Elsevier Announces New Editor-in-Chief for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory

-- January 19, 2011-- Elsevier, a publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and solutions, is pleased to announce that Professor John F. Guzowski of University of California, Irvine, has accepted the position of Editor-in-Chief of Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. He succeeds Professor Paul E. Gold of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from January 1, 2011.

Professor Guzowski expects to maintain and enhance Neurobiology of Learning and Memory's position as a premier journal of the field. He is committed to expediting the review process and prompting communication with authors. "I am truly honored to be appointed to succeed Professor Paul Gold," Professor Guzowski commented. "In his tenure as Editor, Paul has done an outstanding job of making the journal a place where researchers studying memory at multiple levels of analysis come to publish their findings in a timely fashion and to a broad readership. I take over as Editor with the journal in a very strong position, and will work to increase its presence in up and coming research areas of interest to the field of Learning and Memory."

Professor Guzowski received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from UC Irvine. After postdoctoral research at UC Irvine and Johns Hopkins University, he established an independent NIH (National Institutes of Health) funded research program at the University of Arizona and subsequently at the University of New Mexico. His research investigates the role of gene expression, induced by synaptic activity associated with learning, in stabilizing neuronal networks subserving the encoding or consolidation of long-term memories. In 2010 he was appointed as the first James L. McGaugh Chair in the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory, in recognition of his pioneering work examining the molecular and cellular network mechanisms of long-term memory.

Elsevier to Publish Psychosomatics: Official Journal of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine

-- November 10, 2010 -- Elsevier announced today that it is partnering with the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) to publish Psychosomatics, the official journal of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. The announcement, made at the annual APM meeting in Marco Island, Florida, marks an important move by the APM and Elsevier to increase the reach of the journal, particularly to a new generation of psychiatrists, and to promote consultation-liaison psychiatry as a field of growing importance. Elsevier will begin publication of the journal as of the first issue of 2011.

Elsevier Publishing Director Josh Spieler said, "This is the next step in the evolution of Psychosomatics as an international journal committed to helping its readers achieve excellence in the clinical care of patients with psychiatric and medical comorbidity." Elsevier's extensive network of global resources and publishing solutions, including Sciverse ScienceDirect, the world's premier full-text scientific database with more than 10 million peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and archives dating back as far as 1823, will help APM increase the reach and growth of Psychosomatics worldwide. At the same time, the new partnership adds important content to the Elsevier portfolio, enabling the publisher to continue its growth as the market leader in psychiatry journal publishing in North America and internationally.

Psychosomatics: The Journal of Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry is the official journal of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. Peer-reviewed and included in leading abstracting/indexing services such as Index Medicus/MEDLINE, Psychosomatics is published six times a year and is edited by Theodore A. Elsevier Introduces Protein Viewer, Bringing Science to Life

-- October 25, 2010 -- Elsevier introduces Protein Viewer, a new, interactive feature on SciVerse ScienceDirect for the Journal of Molecular Biology (JMB).

With Protein Viewer, readers of JMB now have the power to expand and rotate molecules within the actual article. SciVerse ScienceDirect merges features of the World Protein Database and Jmol, and embeds them into the article, making its use more convenient and user-friendly.

"Protein Viewer will allow all readers to readily visualize and manipulate molecular structures from within the article, without the need for specialized stand-alone graphics software," said Peter Wright, Editor-in-Chief of JMB. "Authors, too, will benefit from having this feature front and center in their articles."

This interactive feature allows the reader to be more active in the article, by allowing them to go more in-depth and be more focused on their area of specific research. Protein Viewer allows the reader to choose the display scheme, size, angle, colors, surface view, and more. Each individual reader might be looking for a specific portion and presentation of the molecule. Now, this individualization is at the fingertips of the reader.

"In our effort to improve the ease-of-use of research, it is apparent that the research article and its related research data need to be integrated in a user-friendly way," comments IJsbrand Jan Aalbersberg, VP Content Innovation at Elsevier. "Our current SciVerse ScienceDirect platform enables that very well, and after using this functionality in chemistry and earth sciences earlier this year, Protein Viewer is the next step in exploiting this feature for the life sciences community."

Protein Viewer is one of many innovative features from Elsevier and SciVerse ScienceDirect, all designed to make the readers' experience the most customized, useful, and relevant. Protein Viewer will be available for more Elsevier journals, such as BBA Proteins and Proteomics and the Journal of Structural Biology. More online innovations are planned for both JMB and other Elsevier journals.

February 19, 2009: Reed Elsevier’s Chief Executive Officer, Sir Crispin Davis, commented on the company's 2008 financial results:

“Reed Elsevier has had a very successful year with major progress in developing the business, and the strongest constant currency adjusted eps growth in a decade. Good revenue growth was seen across most of the business driven by the growing demand for online information and workflow solutions. The revenue growth and a strong focus on restructuring and cost management delivered meaningful margin improvement and the operating cash generation was excellent. Whilst the economic environment has become progressively more challenging, our business is more resilient than most and we are in a strong financial position.

The year saw demonstrable progress across the business from our continued investment in new content and online product development. In Elsevier, subscription renewals reached record levels whilst other online solutions for the scientific and healthcare communities grew rapidly. Online legal information solutions have continued to expand, and there is growing demand for information analytics in the risk market. In legal research we see significant opportunities for more intuitive and interoperable offerings to enhance customer productivity and are stepping up our investment to reflect this. Reed Exhibitions had an exceptional year including the benefit of non annual shows cycling in. Reed Business Information held up well for most of the year, helped by the strong growth of its significant online franchises. In the last quarter, however, the business increasingly felt the impact on advertising markets of the global downturn.
