William Dean Singleton is the CEO of MediaNews Group, Inc..

Based in Denver Colorado, MediaNews Group is a large American newspaper company which was founded in 1983 by CEO William Dean Singleton.

Affiliated Media, Inc. is the privately owned holding company for MediaNews Group. The company operates 54 daily newspapers in 11 states with combined daily and Sunday circulation of approximately 2.4 million and 2.7 million, respectively. MediaNews Group also owns a television station and radio stations in Texas.

The E.W. Scripps Company and MediaNews Group formed Prairie Mountain Publishing in 2006, when Scripps sold MediaNews Group a 50% interest in the company. Prairie Mountain Publishing (originally called the Colorado Publishing Company) owns and operates a number of Colorado newspapers including the Boulder Daily Camera, Colorado Daily, Broomfield Enterprise, Fort Morgan Times, Sterling Journal-Advocate, Lamar Daily News, Akron News-Reporter, Brush News-Tribune, Burlington Record, Julesburg Advocate and Estes Park Trail-Gazette. In August 2009, MediaNews Group, Inc. became the sole owner of this newspaper group.

On January 22, 2010, Affiliated Media filed for bankruptcy, using a “prepackaged” plan of reorganization under chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code in United States Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. The plan provides for a financial restructuring that sharply reduces debt. If the plan is enacted, company debt will fall from about $930 million to $165 million, and senior lenders will swap debt for stock. The group of 116 lenders led by Bank of America will hold a majority of stock. Affiliated Media management led by Singleton will retain 20 percent of the company through stock and warrants, and Singleton and company President Joseph J. Lodovic IV will own all class A shares, allowing them to choose a majority of the seven-member board of directors. Other stockholders will own class B and C shares.

Before declaring bankruptcy, MediaNews Group had joint ventures with a number of other media companies. These included a California newspaper partnership with Gannett Company, another California venture with Hearst Corporation and several Colorado ventures with E.W. Scripps Company.

CEO Singleton is known as an acquisition-minded and numbers-oriented newspaper executive who focuses on cost controls. At the annual meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in April 2006, he said that newspapers have become insular and boring. "We've got to make them much more compelling than they are today," he said. "As an industry, for the last 30 years we've edited newspapers for each other and to win awards so we could pat each other on the back."

Singleton has said that he would not take his company public because he would lose control. "I can't imagine having the Wall Street analysts run my company for me," he said.

Affiliated Media, Inc. reported revenue of $1.06 billion in fiscal 2009, which ended June 30, 2009.

Re: REDUCING UNEMPLOYMENT

Dear Mr. President:

I take this opportunity to suggest a simple (no-doubt, previously investigated) method of reducing unemployment in America:

The “ME” must be in balance with the “WE”

Americans should consider the forty-hour week to be the absolute standard for employment; any additional employment hours robs many individuals of a fair opportunity to be employed.

Emergency personnel can be excluded from logging more than a maximum forty-hour work week during emergencies, however, their annual total hours of employment to be the same as all “employed” Americans; excluded from such would be all self-employed individuals.

With kindest regards, I remain;

Sincerely,

Serge Crespy

The Shakeup at MediaNews: Why It Could Be the Leadup to a Massive Newspaper Consolidation

-- Writing at Nieman Journalism Lab on January 20, 2011, former MediaNews publisher Martin Langeveld shares his perspective on the company's bankruptcy filing and leadership shakeup:

"Over the past few years, opportunities for Singleton to pursue his vision came to a halt. MediaNews could not outrun the ticking clock of debt accumulation; revenues plummeted; newspaper values tumbled; and lenders threatened foreclosure. Lodovic engineered a strategic and very quick bankruptcy that wiped out $765 million in debt by placing nearly all of the company’s stock in the hands of the former bondholders. Remarkably, the bankruptcy reorganization left him and Singleton in charge and with a small equity stake, plus the opportunity to earn back an equity position up to 20 percent. They also had theoretical control in the form of the power to appoint a majority of the board.

It was an unusual outcome — in other major newspaper bankruptcies, the lenders have imposed new management."

MediaNews Group Chief to Step Down

-- William Dean Singleton to become executive chairman upon hiring of new CEO, the Denver Post reported on January 18, 2011:

"Denver Post owner MediaNews Group Inc. said today it is launching a search for a new chief executive officer to succeed current CEO and chairman William Dean Singleton.

Upon hiring of the new chief executive, Singleton will become executive chairman of MediaNews Group, the nation's second-largest newspaper company by circulation. Singleton will remain chairman and publisher of The Denver Post and the Salt Lake Tribune."

Good luck with that. The so-called "Berkeley Voice", a "free" weekly, dropped like the garbage it is on my doorstep every Friday, is "published" by these weasels from another county. The bulk of the paper is real estate listings. I got it to stop -- once, briefly -- by flagging down a delivery vehicle I chanced to see one morning. Otherwise, forget it. They hide their contact info on purpose.

In the June 2009 edition of 5280 magazine, writer Maximillian Potter offers some insight into the character of MediaNews chairman Singleton (in a story about the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post):

"A Texan and former newspaper reporter, Singleton had fashioned MediaNews into one of the nation's largest newspaper companies by acquiring papers on the brink of closure and attempting to make them profitable by dramatically cutting staff and undercutting competing papers. One of his first acquisitions, in the 1970s, was the Fort Worth Press, where his tactics so enraged the newsroom that when he visited the paper staffers pelted him with empty beer cans. Within a year, Singleton shut the paper down. Moving on, he borrowed millions of dollars and built his newspaper empire by being heavily leveraged and outlasting competing papers. A New York Times article once claimed that those in the newspaper business widely regard Singleton as "the industry's leading skinflint."

MNG does not own a paper in Nevada. Perhaps you have it confused with the Humbolt Beacon which MNG does own?

I think that you should make it easier to find contact information on this website, because I've been trying to find a phone number, or adress, or even an email adress that I can use to contact the West Covina Highlander, but the links just take me back to same page everytime. The page that only gives me a so-called profile of the paper. I think you should add a hyperlink or something that can connect people to the main website. This would make it easier to get contact information. Thank you for your time.
