You Are What You Watch: Discovery to Launch Velocity, a Network for Men

-- Expected in late 2011, the re-named HD Theater network, Velocity, will upgrade existing car programming with new series and specials, Discovery announced on April 14, 2011.

"Velocity continues Discovery's tradition of maximizing the value of each of its cable platforms. It is going to be a game changer when it officially joins our portfolio of U.S. networks later this year," said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. "As the first network devoted to the upscale men's market, Velocity will be a hub for viewers within this key demographic, as well as the wealth of advertisers that target them."

Programming is expected to include multimillion-dollar auctions, auto makeovers, high-stakes gaming and insider guides to "the good life."

"In the same way that a car once defined the person who drove it, Velocity will define the viewer who watches it," said Robert S. Scanlon, Senior Vice President of Velocity. "Whether you are a car aficionado or just someone who prefers fast-paced, high-stakes television, Velocity will become a must-have entertainment destination."

Discovery Communications Pushes Back Against the 'Content Farm'

-- HowStuffWorks uses fact-checking, long lead times, edit teams, Advertising Age reported on March 10, 2011:

"Want to grow crops? Fertilizer helps. Want to grow mounds of online content? Discovery Communications believes fertilizer has no place in the process.

As Google tries to penalize the thinly reported, quick-hit web posts proliferating across the web, Discovery -- the Silver Spring, Md., nonfiction-media concern best known as the backer of cable networks including Discovery Channel, TLC: The Learning Channel and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network -- is putting more emphasis on HowStuffWorks, an operation that tries to marry large-scale content generation with the rules of fact-checked journalism.

Where web-content operations with similar goals build their info empires on the backs of hardscrabble freelancers who, in some cases, have little quantifiable expertise in the subjects they discuss, HSW has steadfastly taken the opposite tack.

Discovery says the strategy is working."

Facebook Comments Plugin Now Available on Discovery Communications Web Sites, the company announced on March 1, 2011:

"Discovery Communications today launched Facebook's updated Comments plugin across video clip pages for Discovery Channel, TLC: The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Investigation Discovery, Military Channel, and Discovery Fit & Health, as well as more broadly across HowStuffWorks.com. This integration provides a seamless opportunity for visitors to these sites to comment on content, and have friends comment on the content, right from their Facebook News Feed.

Discovery Communications is one of a select group of launch partners– and one of the only television network groups – chosen to incorporate Facebook's Comments plugin across web sites. This launch deepens Discovery's Open Graph integration beyond likes by allowing fans who are signed in to Facebook to comment and share content while on Discovery's websites. Those actions will be visible on the fans' Facebook Walls as well, allowing their friends to join the dialogue. As part of the launch, Discovery's sites will also allow visitors to like content through the Open Graph. This creates a lasting connection between people and the content they care about.

"With more than 26 million Facebook fans and a passionate and engaged social media community, Discovery is proud to be chosen to launch this Comments plugin," said Kelly Day, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Discovery's Digital Media and Commerce division. "Our fans grow by about 500,000 each week on Facebook, so we know that our real-world programs and characters are resonating in this environment. We look forward to the benefits this additional flexibility affords our viewers to comment, share and like our content and talent.""

This DVD has three episodes with a total run time of 129 minutes and carries a SRP of $14.98. Street date: February 1, 2011.

Eyewitness to Jesus: Join Eyewitness to Jesus as it follows Matthew D'Ancona of Magdelena College in Oxford on his journey from Egypt to the Holy Land in search of evidence to prove that a papyrus from the Gospel of Matthew was written during Jesus' lifetime. D'Ancona hopes to verify that the Gospel was written by someone who witnessed the most significant events in the life of Jesus, such as the last supper and the crucifixion. This DVD has a total run time of 89 minutes and carries a SRP of $14.98. Street date: February 8, 2011
