You Are What You Watch: Discovery to Launch Velocity, a Network for Men

-- Expected in late 2011, the re-named HD Theater network, Velocity, will upgrade existing car programming with new series and specials, Discovery announced on April 14, 2011.

"Velocity continues Discovery's tradition of maximizing the value of each of its cable platforms. It is going to be a game changer when it officially joins our portfolio of U.S. networks later this year," said David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications. "As the first network devoted to the upscale men's market, Velocity will be a hub for viewers within this key demographic, as well as the wealth of advertisers that target them."

Programming is expected to include multimillion-dollar auctions, auto makeovers, high-stakes gaming and insider guides to "the good life."

"In the same way that a car once defined the person who drove it, Velocity will define the viewer who watches it," said Robert S. Scanlon, Senior Vice President of Velocity. "Whether you are a car aficionado or just someone who prefers fast-paced, high-stakes television, Velocity will become a must-have entertainment destination."

Discovery Communications Pushes Back Against the 'Content Farm'

-- HowStuffWorks uses fact-checking, long lead times, edit teams, Advertising Age reported on March 10, 2011:

"Want to grow crops? Fertilizer helps. Want to grow mounds of online content? Discovery Communications believes fertilizer has no place in the process.

As Google tries to penalize the thinly reported, quick-hit web posts proliferating across the web, Discovery -- the Silver Spring, Md., nonfiction-media concern best known as the backer of cable networks including Discovery Channel, TLC: The Learning Channel and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network -- is putting more emphasis on HowStuffWorks, an operation that tries to marry large-scale content generation with the rules of fact-checked journalism.

Where web-content operations with similar goals build their info empires on the backs of hardscrabble freelancers who, in some cases, have little quantifiable expertise in the subjects they discuss, HSW has steadfastly taken the opposite tack.

Discovery says the strategy is working."

Facebook Comments Plugin Now Available on Discovery Communications Web Sites, the company announced on March 1, 2011:

"Discovery Communications today launched Facebook's updated Comments plugin across video clip pages for Discovery Channel, TLC: The Learning Channel, Animal Planet, Science Channel, Investigation Discovery, Military Channel, and Discovery Fit & Health, as well as more broadly across HowStuffWorks.com. This integration provides a seamless opportunity for visitors to these sites to comment on content, and have friends comment on the content, right from their Facebook News Feed.

Discovery Communications is one of a select group of launch partners– and one of the only television network groups – chosen to incorporate Facebook's Comments plugin across web sites. This launch deepens Discovery's Open Graph integration beyond likes by allowing fans who are signed in to Facebook to comment and share content while on Discovery's websites. Those actions will be visible on the fans' Facebook Walls as well, allowing their friends to join the dialogue. As part of the launch, Discovery's sites will also allow visitors to like content through the Open Graph. This creates a lasting connection between people and the content they care about.

"With more than 26 million Facebook fans and a passionate and engaged social media community, Discovery is proud to be chosen to launch this Comments plugin," said Kelly Day, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Discovery's Digital Media and Commerce division. "Our fans grow by about 500,000 each week on Facebook, so we know that our real-world programs and characters are resonating in this environment. We look forward to the benefits this additional flexibility affords our viewers to comment, share and like our content and talent.""

Discovery HQ Adding Security After Hostage Situation

-- On January 12, 2011, Washington DC Examiner reported:

"Discovery Communications is planning security upgrades to its Silver Spring headquarters after a radical environmental activist held three people hostage in the building's lobby in September.

Discovery wants to install an 8-foot-tall, gated fence in its public garden and divide its lobby, with separate entrances for employees and visitors, according to company officials and documents submitted to the Montgomery County Planning Board.

The changes, Discovery says, will let it fully reopen the garden and exhibit-filled lobby to the public."

I hope you have immediate plans to pull Sarah Palin from all of your channels. It is sad that an such an uneducated puppet can become a political celebrity, and even sadder that people support anything she does because they share the same political views. I hope responsible people around the world will boycott all networks allowing Palin and her supporters to voice anything. Freedom requires responsibility and this network is irresponsible by allowing extremist political celebrities a forum.

Palin,Rush Limbaugh and the tea partiers should accept some of the blame for the violent shooting of a congresswoman and others innocents in Arizona.Someone who is already mentally unbalanced can be easily pushed over the edge by inflammatory remarks made by these people.Shme on you TLC for giving her a platform!

Your network has given Sarah Palin a platform for her racist and bigoted and violent provoking thoughts. Its time that the Republican Party distances itself from these loose cannons because they are provoking these unbalanced followers to follow their retoric that promotes violence. I will continue to ask family, neighbors and friends to boycott your network until Ms. Palin is cancelled.

I'm not one to do this so this should to tell you how bad things are for your PR right now. The results of today's horrific shooting in Tuscon are, I believe, the direct result of the inflamitory rhetoric championed by many right-wing kooks in the public eye, and in particular, your aged starlet Sarah Palin. As a longtime fan of the Discovery channel, it saddens me that one bad programming decision (ratings potential aside) leaves me no other choice but to turn my back to your network. I do wonder, who at Discovery, made the final decision to produce a show with such a polarizing and divisive person as its focus? Why would anyone intelligent organization risk alienating 50% of their audience? I'll be back when you permanently stop airing any of those programs. I think that you're going to read a lot of emails like this one. You win some, you lose some.

I blame John McCain first. Without the proper vetting of Sarah Palin, he did not know he gave life to someone that would lead our nation's bigots on a hate filled trip that does not seem to have an end. By instilling fear in people, it brings out the worst. First the assault on Obama, then on anyone that disagrees with the right wing point of view. We have lost the right to voice our opinions if they do not fit in line with this right wing agenda. Now we have this terrible tragedy against a beloved and moderate democrat. It was just a matter of time. The political climate in this country is out of control. The economy is pushing people over the edge. Nothing good seems to be happening to our people and the inmates are running the asylum. Every person that preaches hate is responsible for this. A child and judge are dead among others. When will you stop? When will you learn to respect other people's views without bringing out violence? Everyone that runs a negative campaign filled with lies contribute s to this type of violence. What kind of politician are you? Everyone on TV and on the radio, you too must take some blame. Are you an unbiased reporter or do you stoke the fire of hate? What has happened to this country? In two years, Sarah, Karl, Rush, Glenn, Michelle and others set us back decades. When will it end? Get Sarah off the air. She is a money hungry idiot that fuels up on hate. No more Discovery for me until she is off the air.

My children have grown up watching Discovery, Animal Planet and many other shows, however, as of this second, none of your shows will be allowed in our home as long as someone as lack in a sout and hateful as Sarah Palin is given air time. I will wager that you will receive comments with this sentiment several times over.
