I have the same problems with Reader Digest, The 1st time the lady I spoke to laughed & said to keep them & I did! Now a year later, In the last two days I have received 1 package & next day 3 packages, one was torn open & it was Taste of Home, recipes, big folder. Is Taste of Homes in on this scam? I have read that Readers Digest has gone bankrupt! Why are they still sending ? This time I will talk with BBB! At 70 years old I should not have to keep taking them to the post office! And I warned them not to send me anymore, do I have a right to keep them without their destroying my good credit?

I, too, have recently (Jan/Feb 2010) received 2 pkgs of books with 4 short stories in each and boxes were marked FREE GIFT so I opened them and one of them contained the free train car that I see others have spoken about receiving in these comments & which I NEVER ordered any of these things. Then today I received a statement saying I owed $30.00 + dollars with an envelope to return. Well, I will not be returning any money to Readers Digest AT ALL and would appreciate you taking me off your mailing list. I have not signed up for anything and don't appreciate you sending out these pkgs falsely saying these are FREE GIFTS and then billing for them. You will not be getting any money from me and I will call the 800-463-8820 to complain there also. You don't put any phone #'s on your billing statement, I guess that is on purpose so that you think people won't try to contact you and just send you the money but you are barking up the wrong tree HERE....I will refuse any other pkgs that arrive here in El Paso for me.

Reader's Digest Association To Emerge from Bankruptcy by January 31, 2010

January 15, 2010 – Readers Digest Association announced today that the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York confirms its Plan of Reorganization, clearing the way for RDA to emerge from bankruptcy by January 31, 2010.

Under the terms of the Plan of Reorganization, RDA will reduce its total debt by 75% from more than $2.2 billion to approximately $555 million. Pursuant to the Plan of Reorganization, holders of RDA’s senior secured debt will receive equity, effectively transferring ownership of RDA to the lender group.

I have just received 3 cheap snowglobes obviously which I did not order with no invoice or explanation. Apparently, I am not the only victim of this. Also, I also renewed my subscription in July and have the cancelled check to prove it but am told my subscription ran out in October 09 (which is originally did) until I paid for another in July. What kind of fraud is being perpetuated here? Readers Digest, your reputation is definitely at stake!

I, too, am having problems with my subscription to the magazine. They cashed my check back in July for a renewal covering period 11/16/09 to 11/16/10 and now they sent me a final renewal notice saying my subscription will run out on 11/16/09! I had problems with them years ago and thought these had been solved but I guess not. What a shame. I've written a letter to the President & CEO and will await a reply (hmmmm). Do I have to hold my breath for this?

Thank you Frances for posting the number to call (1-800-463-8820) to have the unordered Select Edition books stopped. I spoke with a representative and they said that it would be taken care of. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm finding it impossible to figure out how to return one of the books I received from Reader's Digest. Customer Service leads me nowhere and FAQ's tells me nothing. Anyone have a suggestion. The only return notice I've seen is to Canada and I'm in the USA

After months, I finally got a phone number that acually worked to cancel the Select Editions and Worlds Most Beatiful Melodies CD's (which I did not order "free gift"). It took me calling two different numbers, but the last one worked as I have received bills for the shipments I did not order want stating my cancelation has been processed and future shipments will be stopped. RD is to send me a return address label for CD's -was told keep Selection Editions sent, billing would be removed I requested address to mail the books back to them also, but none given. Try telephone number 1-800-463-8820. Wish you luck. I have been a customer of RD for over 30 years and have never found it so hard to answers from a company (addresses and phone numbers).

I finished reading the book THE TRUTH ABOUT HISTORY which is published by Readers Digest. There was one glaring error in the article about Saint Luke. It stated that he died at the age of 84 around 150 AD. If that were true, that means he would have been with the Apostle Paul before he was born and possibly after the man died in Rome. The travels of Paul happened shortly after the church was founded in Jerusalem which would have been no later than 32 AD. Even if the journeys had taken place as late as 50 AD, that would have been around 16 years before the birth of Luke. Please correct this mistake before other people who know about the history of the Bible point out the death date problem.

The Reader's Digest Association filed for chapter 11 reorganization on August 24, 2009. Direct magazine reported:

"The Reader’s Digest Association Inc. officially filed for Chapter 11 protection on Aug. 24. In papers filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, the company listed assets of $2.2 billion and liabilities of $3.4 billion.

When the company emerges from bankruptcy protection, it will still carry roughly $550 million in debt on its books. It will also have $150 million in new money debtor-in-possession financing. As part of its filing, the company claimed that more than 80% of its lender group supports its reorganization plan."

Under the reorganization plan, the company will convert much of its debt into equity. The major debt holders, who will be the new owners of the company, include J.P. Morgan Chase, GE Capital, Aries Management, DK Partners, Regiment Capital and Merrill Lynch.
